33rd Annual SFL Summer Camp

*NOTE: REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED*

About Camp

SFL Summer Camp is back in 2023 from August 19-25 at Shekinah Retreat Centre. The camp focuses on issues relevant to young people. The SFL Summer camp addresses challenges facing youth including social justice and equality issues. It combines learning with cooperative recreation activities and lots of fun!

Young people between the ages of 13-16 who are children of union members are eligible to attend.

What we do

MORNINGS

Empowering young people through active learning.

You will learn about youth and unions, organizing, knowing your workplace rights, women and equality, challenging and fighting ageism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, sexism, racism and other issues that affect you as a young person and a young worker. You won’t be sitting in a classroom – you will learn by doing!

AFTERNOONS

Afternoons are filled with a variety of recreational activities. Campers will have the opportunity to canoe, go ziplining, play field games, do crafts, try the climbing wall, and the list goes on.

EVENINGS

Campers will have the chance to participate in a variety of activities that include a talent night, initiative tasks, campfire, and much more, with a dance on the last night.

What we Accomplish

DEEPEN AWARENESS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

with a worker-centered, equal rights perspective. Issues will include, but are not limited to: human rights, international solidarity, ageism, ableism, sexism, transphobia, racism, homophobia, and anti-colonialism.

CREATE A FORUM FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

to exchange ideas, and work together to increase awareness among other young people on the Labour movement, unions, and their rights in the workplace as well as build a support network.

DEVELOP COLLECTIVE ACTION SKILLS

in organizing, problem solving, and decision making.

Logistics

The camp will begin the afternoon of August 19th, and end the morning of August 25th.

Staff at our camp include: Youth Activity Coordinators (YACs), Recreation Staff, Counsellors, and a Camp Nurse.

Registration is $650 per camper ($750 for non-affiliates). Full payment must be made in order for registration to be complete.

Some affiliated unions subsidize this cost – check with your union local. Arrangement for payment by the
union is the responsibility of the camper’s parent(s)/guardian(s).

Limited scholarships are available. Our goal is to ensure no one is excluded because of cost.
