SFL recognizes the National Day of Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Women
Tomorrow – December 6th – is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) recognizes this important day, and remembers the École Polytechnique shooting when 14 young women lost their lives.
They were killed because they were women.
Every December 6th since that tragic day in 1989, Canadians come together both to remember those who were lost and to pledge action to end violence against women.
“Even after 28 years the pain of December 6th does not diminish,” said SFL Secretary-Treasurer Lori Johb, “the day also serves as a solemn reminder that violence against women and girls is a human rights issue – it’s everybody’s issue – and we have so much more work to do,” she added.
On behalf of its 100,000 members the SFL will maintain its work to end violence against women – with a continued focus on how domestic violence affects women in the workplace.
“The Saskatchewan labour movement continues to partner with community groups to ensure survivors of domestic violence can access the services they need,” said SFL president Larry Hubich, “we are calling on the Saskatchewan government, and governments across Canada, to pass legislation which gives paid leave from work for survivors,” he added.
The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, in partnership with the Canadian Labour Congress and the Regina & District Labour Council, is holding a candle light vigil to commemorate the 1989 Montreal Massacre. Everyone is welcome to attend. The vigil will take place December 6th at 6:30PM at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral at 1861 McIntyre Street in Regina.
