Saskatchewan Federation of Labour kicks off 65th annual convention
Released October 21, 2021
Today, the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) officially opened its 65th Annual Convention online with hundreds of delegates representing working people from every corner of the province in attendance on the virtual convention platform.
“This convention is a chance for workers to come together, despite being apart,” said SFL President Lori Johb. “As workers are the ones who have been and continue to be on the front lines of the pandemic, it’s important for us to be able to come together in solidarity as Saskatchewan’s labour movement and set the direction of the federation of labour for the coming year as we continue to push for a living wage, paid sick leave for all workers, and a worker-focused pandemic recovery.”
The theme for this year’s convention is “Putting Workers First.” The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that Saskatchewan workers have been resilient and that our frontline workers are heroes who provide us with life’s essentials. As we battle a devastating fourth wave of COVID-19,we must all come together as working people and demand better.
The convention is also a special milestone for the SFL, marking 65 years since its original founding convention in 1956.
“For 65 years, workers in this province have known that they can count on us to be on their side,” Johb said. “It hasn’t always been easy. We’ve had our fair share of struggles, but we’ve won many important victories that have made life better for workers not just in Saskatchewan, but across the country. Through it all, for 65 years, we have stood together for fairness, equality, and a better quality of life for working people.”
The convention will conclude on Friday afternoon, following the elections of President and Secretary-Treasurer.
