SASKATCHEWAN FEDERATION OF LABOUR PRESIDENT RESPONDS TO PROVINCIAL BUDGET

REGINA – The President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, Lori Johb, made the following statement in response to the provincial budget:

“The Minister claims that this budget is supposed to help with the cost of living and improve health care. It fails on both counts.

“The best way to fix affordability is to pay workers a living wage. For example, Saskatchewan’s minimum wage remains ludicrously low at $15.35. This is miles below what it costs to live in our province. Any affordability measures announced without improving wages in this province will achieve very little.

“While the Minister threw big numbers around health care spending and human resources, he didn’t talk about how underpaid many of Saskatchewan’s health care workers are, many going years without a raise. It doesn’t matter how much the government tries to promote working here if they won’t pay competitive wages.

“It’s also deeply concerning that this government is cutting 600 jobs in Crowns and other departments. These jobs cuts put families in economic jeopardy and workers who are no longer there to serve the people of this province."
