Mayor and Council of the City of Prince Albert
c/o Office of the City Clerk
1084 Central Avenue
Prince Albert, SK S6V 7P3
To Mayor and Council,
I’m writing to you today regarding discussion at council on the privatization of Assessment Services with City of Prince Albert. On behalf of our 100,000 affiliate members across the province, we wish to state our opposition to the proposal.
It’s well established that privatization of operations and services within municipal governments seldom provide improvements. When the motivation of those providing operations and services switch from service to the community to profiteering, the promised efficiencies and savings often do not materialize.
As the correspondence from CUPE Local 882 President Cheryl Clayton reveals, the Assessors Department has accumulated an impressive record of institutional knowledge and the capacity to work in tandem with other municipal departments. It’s inconceivable that throwing this service and these workers away will magically create efficiency.
We urge the Mayor and Council to reject this path. Investment in retaining and development of the staff of Assessment Services would prove to be far more beneficial than paying for the profit margin of a privatized service provider.
Thank you for your consideration.
In solidarity,
Lori Johb, President
Saskatchewan Federation of Labour
