CUPE Local 8125
To the members of CUPE WestJet Component,
I’m writing to express the solidarity and support of our 100,000 affiliate members across Saskatchewan for members of CUPE WestJet Component (Local 8125). Like so many across Canada, these workers are fighting for respect and fair pay.
It’s incredible that these workers have to fight to end working without pay. In almost any other workplace, working for a significant amount of time without compensation would be unthinkable. Yet, every day and every flight, that’s what the employer expects these workers to do. Their fight to end this practice is important to every worker in Canada.
These CUPE members are under threat of interference in the bargaining process from the federal government. The federal government interfered with bargaining last year when Air Canada flight attendant tried to fight to improve their working lives. This cannot be repeated.
If we are to end unpaid work in airlines and prevent its spread to other workplaces, the federal government must respect the bargaining process and the right to strike for these union members. The continued threats to these rights for airline workers and all workers must end here.
In Solidarity,
Lori Johb,
President, Saskatchewan Federation of Labour
